North Brother Island, located in the East River just minutes away by ferry from the Bronx, might be NYC’s very own secret forbidden island. Not open to the public since the late 60s/early 70s. Former home to Typhoid Mary, an actual person who really did spread Typhoid Fever in the early 1900s, the island was placed under the responsibility of the NYC Parks Department in 2001.
